I am in the sea between Sicily and Africa! But on the rock of Pantelleria. Not-so-easy transit from Portugal to this small island closest to the Tunisian coast. Some of the elements of the journey: up at 4AM in Porto, taxi to airport at 5AM for 7AM flight to Rome, 45-minute transfer time in crazed Rome airport for flight to Palermo (that was my jog for the day), FOUR airports all together that day…and, finally, arrival in Pantelleria by scary puddle-jumper for dinner…which was unquestionably worth it all.

The Black Pearl of the Mediterranean: My First Impressions of Pantelleria
On that trip in from Portugal…I basically had no idea what lay in front of me! Pantelleria, as related to me in the past, always had exotic aspects. I have tried three times before, over many years, to get here from Sicily–my plans always dashed by gale force winds. “Ah, Pantelleria,” my friends would say…it’s a crazy place.” Let the myths begin: Ulysses cavorted with Calypso here, and many other cavortings are in the literature. I’ve been longing to see this for myself (as voyeur, not necessarily as cavorter)–but, in 2012, I couldn’t know before arriving if Pantelleria still feels isolated, dangerous, idiosyncratic…or if it feels like another small Mediterranean island with lots of tourists. This is what I pondered on the airplane (s!) over. By Tuesday, I will have my first impressions gathered. You shall read them and learn: plan a visit to Pantelleria in 2013? or spend your travel dollars elsewhere?

Crazy Egg: Deep-Fried in EVOO
I made a major discovery last year: if you break an egg into a pan of deep oil at 365 degrees–one minute later you will have a gorgeous fried egg, DEEP-fried egg, all crazy swirls and crunches. Watch me do it in this week’s new video from DRTV…then watch me demonstrate the perfect way to serve it!
